Language proficiency is the first problem many Nepali students come across during their journey abroad. Coming from a place where English is not a native language, many students often face the dilemma of whether to try hard and gain good scores in IELTS or opt for a language waiver that many institutions provide. 

Both the options have their own pros and cons. In such situations, the students are often left to dwell on the idea of “which is the best possible option?”. Following are some things to consider when choosing your option.

Giving IELTS/PTE can be a good choice for you if

You want more course choice

Often there are courses especially related to adverse fields like law, medical, and health where language exceptions are not provided. In those spheres, gaining a quality degree and having a desired course vastly depends upon your language proficiency test. Often than not you also get courses that are highly competitive with good job scope. 

Want to increase your English Proficiency 

If you are someone yet not convinced of your own skills, it is going to be difficult for you to convince others of your skills in the language. During the process of application in many English speaking countries like the UK and Australia, it is heavily preferred that the student has some sort of English proficiency evidence that is reliable, like IELTS or PTE. In such conditions, to improve your own skills and get a better chance of quality education, IELTS PTE can be a good choice for you.

Want to apply at multiple destinations

If you want to apply for the UK, many universities accept your English exam test in high school and the Medium of Instruction certificate from your previous college. In such cases, IELTS/PTE might not be necessary but when applying for other destinations like Australia and Canada, a proficiency test is mandated. In the case of choosing multiple destinations, IELTS is a safer choice.

You should opt for Waiver if

You want a more economical option

Opting for waiver is the real deal,if you are in a financial crunch and need an option that is more economical. Unlike the English test, you do not need to pay for a certificate. You can apply to many UK universities with just B+ in your higher education or MOI waiver from your university where you recently graduated from.

You need to apply fast- the intake is near

If the intake is near and you do not have time, choosing a MOI option is the better route to get work done fast. However, when doing this you need to keep in mind that only select universities allow such flexibility. Ensuring you have enough time for other alternatives is suggested if you do not want to play all cards in your hands. It is usually a suggested option if you are applying for an English speaking country with fairer language requirements.

Your university allows waiver option

If you are a hundred percent certain of applying to a specific university and only that university, then choosing for a waiver option is best if your uni of choice allows it. When doing so keep in mind that waiver flexibility has criteria based on where you apply. For example, Bradford New University  accepts C+ in English but another university might not accept that grade for the same degree and the same course. So you must be aware of the criterion.

Therefore, the best solution is not the same for every circumstance, it depends on where you apply for what reasons.
